Kris Jones, Illustrator
Kris Jones, born in Wales in 1970, always loved to draw. As a child, he’d draw and copy from comic books such as the Beano and Dandy and it offered a great diversion from the unhappy time he spent in school as he struggled through problems with bullying and his feeling of not really fitting in. Drawing and painting became more than just a hobby, it was an escape.
In 2001 Kris graduated from Carmarthenshire Pibwrlwyd College of Art and Design and ventured straight into the professional world of illustration. The hobby and escapism had revealed real talent that matured into a lifelong career that would provide artwork and illustrations for customers all over the world and for his own books too. He’s spent the last 18 years devising and creating all sorts of children’s activity books and storybooks for both the public and educational sectors. They’re available in a variety of languages and all have children’s safety as their theme.
The desire to illustrate and write his own children’s books was always in the back of Kris’ mind. Having three children (now in their teens), Kris and his lovely wife Rebecca know the hardship and constant worry of raising children, including all the disgusting bits that go hand in hand with that lifelong task and these were the inspiration for his book “Naughty Nerys Learns About Germs” – because nothing strikes dread into the heart of a parent quite like that horrific call in the night that signals tummy upsets and midnight cleaning: the wail of “Muuuuuummy… my stomach huuurts” is enough to fill even the most hardened parent with true fear and bilious anticipation. To try and counter this, Kris wrote the perfect cuddle-up story to encourage better hygiene – and therefore much less sickness – in children and it’s available on Amazon: and if it saves just one young person the awful d&v experience and one parent the dreaded smell of sick, it will all have been worth it!
His illustrations are a combination of traditional graphic styles and methods but he also uses the latest in contemporary digital techniques to ensure printable perfection and, additionally to his children’s illustrations, also produces wildlife and historical drawings in a variety of styles. Turnaround can be as little as 24 hours – even same-day results are possible. Recent commissions have included yet more illustrations for children’s books and designs for clients in the public and educational sectors. Another regular client is the NHS, for whom he’s produced patient booklets, murals and backgrounds in both 2D and 3D and his work is also a regular at the National Botanic Garden of Wales and commissioned frequently by both UK and US local government agencies.
Kris works with his clients right from the initial enquiry through brainstorming, conceptualisation, sketching, development and on to the desired result so he’s with you every step of the way, working within your budget and time-frame and helping you to craft any ideas you may have into an effective and workable creation that adds value to your project or enterprise whilst ensuring it stays true to your aim, ethos and vision.
